Turkey opens the largest public garden with 10,000 trees

The Turkish government will open the largest public garden in Turkey. According to this project, there will be about 10,000 trees and more than 42,000 plants in the garden next to the old Ataturk airport. Moreover, there is a garden of 499,000 square meters (5,371,191 square feet). The park area is expected to be about 2 million square meters with various green spaces, when the project is over.

Project details

The garden was named the "green corridor". The project includes not only this garden, but also its social and entertainment infrastructure necessary for citizens. All amenities will be located on a large area of 70,000 square meters.

The Turkish government decided to renovate the airport and make a public garden after the opening of Istanbul’s much larger airport in October 2018.

According to officials, "The cargo area of the Istanbul airport is larger, so it will serve passengers safely. In addition, the old airport will have one line to serve the needs of a nearby hospital."

The first stage of the project to create a new garden includes 10,000 trees and 42,000 plants. Meanwhile, it is planned that the garden area will consist of over 145,000 trees, including 350-year-old olive trees, 50-60-year-old lime trees and plane trees. The public garden will serve nine entrances and allow citizens to purchase organic products that will be grown in greenhouses and orchards located at these entrances.

Moreover, the garden will have a 2.5-km-long artificial stream from south to north, viewing terraces, picnic and recreation areas, cycling and walking paths.

Earthquake emergency pick-up area

According to official information, one of the tasks of the public garden at the Ataturk airport will be to gather people under its roof in case of natural disasters. The garden can accommodate 40,000 tents for victims and provide emergency shelter for up to 165,000 people.
