How Many Days Can Foreigners Stay in Turkey Without a Visa?

The visa-free period depends on your passport. According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 2026:

CitizenshipVisa-free period
Germany, Denmark Up to 90 days
United Kingdom (tourism) Up to 90 days in any 180-day period

If you want to stay longer than your visa-free limit, see our article on what to do if you want to stay longer than 60 days.

If you plan to stay in Turkey for an extended period, you will need to obtain a residence permit (ikamet). The application is submitted online via the e-ikamet system before your visa-free period expires. While the application is being reviewed, the application document allows you to stay in the country, and a decision is made within 90 days.

You will need to obtain a residence permit if:

  • you plan to buy or rent a flat in Turkey for a long period;
  • you are going to study, work or conduct business negotiations;
  • you plan to holiday on the coast for more than 2 months;
  • you are marrying a Turkish citizen.

Grounds for a residence permit in 2026

GroundWhat you need to know
Buying a home A TAPU price of USD 200,000 or more, the property designated as a residence (konut), and a neighbourhood open to residence permits
Renting, tourism A first tourist residence permit is not granted to everyone and is usually issued for up to a year; extending it is harder
Marriage to a Turkish citizen A family residence permit for up to 3 years
Work A work permit replaces a residence permit, so a separate ikamet is not needed
Citizenship by investment Buying property worth USD 400,000 or more with an obligation not to sell it for three years

Neighbourhoods closed to residence permits for foreigners exist in 63 Turkish provinces. In Alanya, according to a briefing by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ALTSO) in June 2026, applications are again accepted in Mahmutlar, Kestel, Avsallar and Kargıcak, but there is no official register, so the address is checked before the deal. The residence permit card costs TL 964 in 2026.

If you obtain a residence permit, you will be permitted to stay in Turkey for more than the visa-free period. We have explained in detail how to apply for a residence permit and which documents you need.

What happens if you overstay. A fine is charged on departure, and its amount depends on your citizenship and the length of the overstay. According to Turkish lawyers, if the overstay is less than 3 months and you leave on your own after paying the fine, an entry ban is usually not imposed. For longer overstays, an entry ban of 1 to 5 years is possible.

Specialists from Yekta Homes will always advise on how many days foreigners can stay in Turkey without a visa, and help you buy or rent accommodation.

"Many buyers first come visa-free, look at apartments and only then decide on a residence permit. We advise counting the days from your first entry: if the purchase takes longer, it is better to apply for an ikamet early, before the visa-free period ends," says a sales manager at Yekta Homes.

Visa Calculator Under the New Schengen Rules

Since Schengen Area countries introduced a new method for calculating days of stay in the Schengen area (no more than 90 days out of 180), many foreigners have started using a visa day calculator. It shows how long you can stay in EU countries with a multi-entry visa and prevents calculation errors. Since October 2025, the Entry/Exit System (EES) has been operating at Schengen borders and records border crossing dates automatically, so counting mistakes there are now visible immediately.

Although Turkey is not a part of the Schengen Area, the visa calculator, based on the new Schengen rules, is also convenient for calculating the days of stay in the Republic of Turkey. It allows you to find out exactly how many days foreigners who frequently visit this country can stay in Turkey.

What Does the Visa Day Calculator Show?

The visa day calculator will show:

  • how many days you have already spent in the Republic of Turkey over a 180-day period;
  • the start dates of all previous and current periods of stay in the country;
  • the permissible number of days in Turkey without a visa;
  • the deadline for departure from the country of stay;
  • the start and end dates of permitted stay.

For countries with a 90-in-180 rule, days are counted over a rolling 180-day window. A short trip out of the country does not reset the counter.

Who the visa-free period will not be enough for

  • Those who want to spend the whole winter by the sea. 90 days in 180 is less than a season, so a residence permit is needed.
  • Those who plan to work. Visa-free entry does not give the right to work; a work permit is required.
  • Those counting on short trips out to "reset" the limit. Leaving for a day or two does not reset the 90-in-180 limit.
  • Those buying an apartment below USD 200,000 for a residence permit. Such a home will not qualify.

Each of these situations is visible in advance. The solution is to apply for a residence permit before the visa-free period ends or to choose an apartment that meets the threshold and is located in an open neighbourhood.
