Alanya anticipates anniversary: Red Tower turns 800

In sunny Alanya, on the Mediterranean coast, preparations are in full swing for a significant historical event. This year, the famous Red Tower, or Kyzyl Kule, turns exactly 800 years old. This majestic monument of Seljuk architecture, erected in 1226 by order of Sultan Ala ad-Din Key-Kubad I, has long been a symbol of the city – its image even adorns the local flag.

The tower, built by master craftsman Ebu Ali Reha el-Kettani from Aleppo, is impressive in size: it is 33 metres high and 29 metres in diameter. Its octagonal shape and red brick, from which it gets its name, made it an impregnable fortress to protect the port and shipyard from sea raids. Over the centuries, it has weathered many storms and sieges, but has been preserved in its original form, becoming part of UNESCO's World Heritage List with provisional status.

Today, the authorities of Alanya, led by the mayor's office and the governor of Antalya, are actively planning celebrations. Meetings have already been held with representatives of culture, business and tourism. The programme includes festivals, exhibitions, concerts and historical reenactments. The events are expected to attract thousands of visitors, highlighting the region's rich heritage. ‘This is not just an anniversary, but an opportunity to remind people of our history and unity,’ said one of the organisers.

The celebration promises to be grand, combining the traditions of the past with modern colour. Tourists will be able to climb to the tower's observation deck to enjoy the panorama of the bay and take part in themed excursions.

Alanya, with its warm climate and ancient ruins, has always attracted travellers. The 800th anniversary of the Red Tower is an opportunity to rediscover this gem of Turkey.
